How many Dutch people make this mistake?
‘When I speak English, I have a blackout.’
‘Blackout' is a word we use in English but it means something else to the Dutch use of the word.
A ‘Blackout' is when it is darkness at night and there is not light. Or it is a temporary loss of consciousness.
‘The electricity died and we had a blackout
‘When I drink too much alcohol, I blackout.’
‘He was hit on the head and blacked out.’
Instead say ‘Go blank’/‘Went blank’.
‘His mind goes blank when he’s nervous.’
‘I went blank. I couldn’t remember a single English word!’
It’s okay to make mistakes but you will only get better if someone tells you that you have made an error.
